You've booked your session, now what?

Here are the biggest things to consider and plan for before meeting for your shoot.

  1. INSPIRATION: You've probably already been looking at Pinterest boards and photos online, you may have a specific idea or "vibe" you're wanting to capture. Feel free to send these to me. If there are certain poses you've seen that you like or dislike, please share those as well so I can get a feel for what you like and better understand your goal as my client.
  2. LOCATION: If you haven't narrowed down your ideal location, now is the time to do so. I will send you a list with all my favorite spots for you to choose from if you don't already have one of your own in mind. Once the location has been decided and agreed on by both of us, take your time to think about all the elements and what you may need. I always have bug spray and extra towels, but these are definitely items that never hurt to have on hand! If the terrain could be questionable (muddy or sandy) consider bringing a change of shoes for any walking and moving from spot to spot.
  3. OUTFITS: Rule number one is iron that shirt! Creases and wrinkles love to show in photos, even in the most beautiful golden light. Always try to plan your outfits to coordinate with others in the shots. If there are multiple family members, try not to mix too may patterns or colors. Consider the time of year or the vibe you want in your photos as well. Warm colors are great for fall, cool colors are wonderful for winter, brights are great for spring and summer, neutrals can give a classy look year-round. Also, plan your outfit changes. There isn't always a convenient bathroom nearby. Depending on the location you may need to do a quick change in the car or even change over what you're already wearing.
  4. HAIR & MAKEUP: I highly recommend you do a trial run before any shoot if you're not doing your regular routine. If you're planning on getting a new haircut, color job, or highlights, do so a week before the shoot. This also applies to other cosmetics such as Botox or fillers. Always allow at least one week for everything to "relax". Of course, consider the weather. This is Texas and we never really know what to expect. If your hair doesn't hold curl well outside, you may not want to curl it for an outdoor shoot.
  5. ACCESSORIES: Be mindful of your smart watch, hair ties, scrunchies, livestrong bracelet, anything you may wear on your wrist without even realizing. Remember to change your necklace if you plan to. Match your shoes to your outfit, as well as other accessories. Clean your glasses if wearing any so that any smudges don't hide your eyes (removing the lenses is the best way to avoid this as well as other glare issues). If you're bringing a cap and gown and/or sash, make sure to iron or steam all the creases out.
  6. PROPS: If you have any props you would like to use, get them together several days before the shoot so you're not driving yourself crazy. Put them all in one bag/box to make it easier to tote around our location. I love props! They bring so much personality to a shoot, bring them!
  7. PETS: We must discuss any pets BEFORE the shoot. I love all pets! But, some locations don't allow them, some situations aren't ideal for them, and there's some additional planning needed on my end as well. IF YOU WANT ANY PETS INVOLVED THEY MUST HAVE THEIR OWN HANDLER (SOMEONE NOT BEING PHOTOGRAPHED). Anyone you trust who is available to be a handler can help harness your pet, give them water and walk them from spot to spot, and can assist in certain posing where the pet is involved. It is nearly impossible to get those "Pinterest Pawfect" shots without the assistance of someone behind-the-scenes.
